Statue Park, Budapest, Hungary
August 13, 2007

While Mark and Kristen Voorhies were visiting us we decided to go and visit Statue Park which is just about 15 minutes from our house. When the communist government fell in 1989 in Hungary, most of the communist statues scattered throughout the city were immediately removed. A few years later, it was decided to create an outdoor "museum" of these statues, opening in 1993, on the 2nd anniversary of the withdrawal of Russian troops from the Hungarian territory. Just outside the park is a re-creation of the base of the 25 meter high Stalin monument that was erected in 1951 in celebration of Stalin's 70th birtday. This statue was torn down as part of the 1956 Hungarian revolution (today, in the original spot of the Stalin monument is a monument honoring the '56 revolution), leaving only the base and the boots. The recreation outside of Statue park includes the base and just the boots.
