I had reserved us places to stay up before leaving Budapest for our lodging only up until this point. I couldn't really find a place that was available in Montenegro, so we just decided to wing it. We made our way to Becici, Montenegro, a resort town with hotel complexes built up along the beach. We stopped at one of these, deciding it was worth the extra money to have a resort experience here and enjoy the most spectacular beaches and views that this country provides plus an all-inclusive hotel, so we ate a lot. From a scenery perspective, this coast of Montenegro is even more beautiful than Croatia, although outside of these resort hotels, the man made structures take away from the natural beauty (run down buildings, not ancient, more 70's ish). Croatia was more refined in this regard.
Becici/Sveti Stefan, Montenegro ... Jul 31-Aug 1
On the map the border of Croatia and Montenegro LOOKS like it is only an hour from Dubrovnik. It took us a little longer than that, since it was a two lane road with trucks and tourists and a border crossing that took an hour. I think it took us over three hours to make the short drive. That being said, it was a scenic drive along the Adriatic coast, so admittedly, it wasn't bad.

After swimming all afternoon and then again the next morning, we started our way back to Budapest, first stopping a few miles past Becici, at Sveti Stephan, once a 15th century fishing village. In 1950 the last of the inhabitants were evicted and they transformed the tiny island town into an exclusive resort (Marilyn Monroe, Claudia Schiffer, Kirk Douglas all stayed there), maintaining the historical exterior, while remodeling the interior to modern luxury. We were very excited to visit this place.
After parking our car and walking across the "bridge" to reach the town, we found that it was CLOSED! They had locked the gate, I guess for another remodeling. A local told us that it was being renovated and would not open for another year. We enjoyed the exterior though, before driving through the countryside of Montenegro into Bosnia, for a visit to Sarajevo.
