Bangkok, Thailand (Day 1) ... Dec 18, 2011

We took our first vacation outside of China and decided to spend it in Bangkok and Phuket.  We first flew in to Bangkok, taking basically a red eye from Shanghai.  We arrived early morning and somehow managed to fit all of our stuff (and us) into a taxi to our hotel.  We were fortunate to be able to check in, shower, and then quickly head off to the Chatuchak Market, the famous weekend market in Bangkok.  Here we searched (and found) the Thai silverware Heather had wanted, tasted real coconut ice-cream (right out of a coconut shell), got a picture with Ryan's favorite Autobot (BumbleBee), and meandered through the many hallways that felt like a wall caving in on you version of the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul.
After we were done visiting the market, we went to a restaurant recommended to us by our friends, the Clarke's, who used to live here.  It was magical.  Thai food is the best food on the planet, and unlike Mexican food in Mexico and Chinese food in China, it is GOOD in Thailand!  We had our fill of a variety of dishes.  The great thing about food in Bangkok is that it is inexpensive enough that you can order a number of different dishes for a good variety or just to experiment...fortunately (or unfortunately) we liked everything we ordered.
At this point we were tired and decided to just head back to the hotel for the evening.  The downside to traveling with young kids is that we are not experiencing much of the night life in the cities we visit.  Admittedly, this is a great excuse for us, as far as I am concerned!
I did realize, however,  that we forgot the girls' swimsuits, so Katie and I took a risk and got into a Tuk-Tuk swerving through the busy streets of Bangkok to go find one.  It seemed to be the quickest way and we made it back in one piece (with a swimsuit).
