Flight Home from Beijing ... June 2013

Flight Home from Beijing
June 23, 2013

What an interesting night!  There was lightning so all the flights out of Beijing were cancelled or delayed.  In any airport this would be a nightmare, but in a Chinese airport this was an epic event.  The Chinese are not known for their ability to queue.  It is survival of the fittest. There is no stopping someone from just walking to the front of the line and cutting in front of dozens of people.  So one can imagine the chaos of an airport with every flight delayed.  I wanted to make sure we got on the next flight to Shanghai, but it was challenging battling the Chinese with four very sleepy children.  Aaron had left earlier that day for a business trip, so it was just Lindsay and me with the kids.  Fortunately I had her so she could sit with the kids while I tried to fight my way into line.  They were all falling asleep so moving them from place to place was also interesting!  We finally made our way to the front of the line of the flight to Shanghai, but people were fighting right and left to go next.  With Lindsay sitting with a sleeping Ashley, Ryan and Sophie, Katie and I were able to use our best boxing out basketball skills to throw our passports in front of the next agent.  I think I recall saying, "Katie!!!  On your left!!  Don't let him get in front of you!  You give her our passports first!"  Katie did great.  We got on our flight late that night and survived Chinese airport culture at its finest.
