Big School Girl ... August 2013

Big School Girl
August 2013

This girl takes my breath away.  I love how much fun she is having at school, and how she feels like such a big girl!  These are some of my favorite pictures of her as she is adjusting to her big school girl life.  She hit the jackpot with her teacher,  Miss Gemma.  And the other children in her Pelican class are adorable.  She is making some really cute friends.  Nursery is an all day, every day program at Dulwich, but I wasn't ready to send her all day.  So I pick Sophie up every day at 12:30 and we have some quality time together every afternoon.  Next year I will have to send her all day, so I am soaking up all the one on one cuddle time I have with her right now.

Ryan's Funny Food Fetishes ... August 2013

Ryan's Funny Food Fetishes
August 2013

Ryan doesn't eat much, but sometimes we can convince him to eat some of the things he sticks his nose up at if we let him drown it in ketchup.  He LOVES ketchup.  The other thing he can eat endlessly is cream of wheat.  I like to make it with half milk/half french vanilla creamer, and cut up peaches.  Ryan eats a couple large servings himself, and then finishes everyone else's, and anything that might still be left in the pot.  I don't have a picture of his other favorite food, but this kid could live on Life cereal.

I thought I would include this cute note of Ryan's, "Don't Go En Thes Plas" (don't go in this place).

Fun Times Back with Friends ... August 2013

Fun Time Back with Friends
August 2013

The end of the summer is always a little bitter sweet.  We have such a great time with our friends and family in Utah.  Leaving them and going back to Shanghai is always a little sad, but once we are back, see our friends and get back into school always makes us feel better and happy to be back.  We have all been blessed with great friends here in Shanghai that are making our experience unforgettable, not to mention having friends for life all over the world!

Water ballon fights with back yard neighbor Aoife, and Katie's friend Caitlin.

Ryan brings home some of his buddies, XX, Thomas and Connor.

The girls and their besties, Sophie, Claire, Giulia and Jen.  Sophie is feeling pretty left out.

Cinderella and Her Prince ... August 2013

Cinderella and Her Prince
August 2013

Ryan and Sophie were playing up in the playroom and decided to play dress up.  Sophie dressed up as her favorite princess, Cinderella.  Ryan decided to run to his closet and dress up like Prince Charming.  He put on his cute seersucker blazer and a tie, but didn't get to crazy and change his pants.  He kept his sweats on for a quicker change back!

Ryan has been playing soccer with one of his best buddies, Beck, for 2 years now.  One day after practice we took the kids to Baker and Spice at the Kerry for a yummy dinner.

1st Day of School ... August 2013

1st Day of School
August 2013

Another summer is in the books and we are getting ready to start a big year of school. The night before school started we had a little back to school family home evening and made some goals for the year.  We also made a time capsule that we can open at the end of the school year to see how far we came that year.

Katie is starting Year 7 in the Senior School (middle school).  She was rearing to go and I was not as excited.  It makes me sad to see her growing up so fast and becoming more independent.  A Macbook Air is a requirement for senior school, which made Katie feel all the more grown up.  This was also a big year for Sophie.  She is starting Nursery at Dulwich (preschool), and is so, so excited to be in her uniform on the first day of school like the big kids!  Ashley was starting Year 4 (third grade) and Ryan was starting Year 1 (kindergarten).  I guess this would have seemed like a bigger year for Ryan since her was starting Kindergarten, but in the British system that we have been in at Dulwich their Reception year (pre-K) is more like Kindergarten.  He started full time last year, and was already in the school groove.

She would have been too embarrassed to take a picture in front of the senior school, so I snuck one of her walking down the hallway.  She was off.

Ryan and Sophie outside of Ducks.  They are so excited for the year ahead!

Ryan is going to be in the Tamarin Class with Mrs. Grey.

Reunited with best buddy Connor!  They are thrilled to be in the same class this year!

Sophie with her new teacher Miss Gemma.  Gemma teaches the Pelicans and Sophie could not be more excited to be a big school girl.  And I LOVE the pinafore dress!

Langkawi ... August 2013

Langkawi, Malaysia
August 2013

An early morning flight took us to the island of Langkawi, off Malaysia's northwest coast, very close to Thailand.  We had a great week, but there were some things that weren't so great also.  Our resort was beautiful, but the food was terrible.  And there weren't any great places close to the resort where we could go and eat.  We were hungry a lot.  The service was pretty poor too.  And somewhere along the way we all got food poisoning and had to spend some time in bed, and close to the bathroom.  Those were some pretty major downsides, but we did enjoy a lot of other parts of the resort and the island.

Still working on getting over the jet lag.

Pool side chocolate milk.  What a life she has.

Pool side lunch time.

This was our first trip where all four of our kids could go to the Kids' Zone!!!  It was a very nice perk for Aaron and I to be able to drop them all off and have some resort time to ourselves.  And they had a blast. Sophie was especially excited to be like the big kids and do the crafts and games that the big kids got to do.  Great times for all!

Enjoying a little beach time. We kayaked, swam, buried each other in the sand, and soaked up the sun!

We went out on a boat tour through the mangroves.  It was wonderful to get to experience close up the natural beauty of this island.  We walked through caves and saw bats, alligators, snakes, hawks and all sorts of crazy creatures.  It started POURING rain as we came out of the cave, so we took cover for a few minutes, but the sun soon came out for the rest of our boat tour.

We ate a traditional Malaysian lunch (well, tourist traditional) out on the water during our boat tour at a place called Hole in the Wall.

Getting ready to go out for the evening!  I know I don't have much longer to buy matching clothes for my girls, but I am trying to get it in while I can.

Ryan was ready to go out too!

My friend Vanessa recommended a Thai restaurant that was up on the north shore of the island.  It was built out on the tree tops, so it had the coolest ambiance.  We were literally eating in the tree tops.  I wish I could remember the name of the restaurant, but it was arguably the best Thai food I have ever had.  We ate ourselves silly, and loved watching the monkeys gliding through the trees around us.

There was a little touristy area at the base of the skybridge.

There was a 4D experience theatre where we stopped to watch a show.  It may have made us a little motion sick, but no one threw up!

We took the cable car up to the Skybridge up on the north side of the island.  It was a really steep ride to get up there.  I was already getting nervous about the ride down.

We spent some time up at the observation deck.  The actual skybridge was under maintenance, so we couldn't walk out on that.  I thought it was pretty amazing and gorgeous from all the 360 degree look out points up there.  Langkawi is a beautiful island.

This is the actual skybridge that is under maintenance.  I think I would have been too nervous to walk across it anyway.  My thrill seeking kids would have loved it, but the steep drop of the cable car on the way down was good enough for me.

One of my favorite things about traveling in Asia is the things that get lost in translation.  I am assuming "naked light" means open flames.  But my favorite is the "highly inflammable".  So is there water be behind those doors?  What else is INflammable?

Typical lunch for me when we are at a resort.  We eat such a big breakfast that I usually am not hungry for lunch, but need a little something.  So chocolate and a diet coke help tide me over until dinner.
