Eger is just over an hour outside of Budapest, but this was the first time we had taken the time to stop and see it. It is an AMAZING city, I had no idea!

In 1552 the Siege of Eger began, where the Turks, roughly 150,000 strong (admittedly not all soldiers, but still) could not overtake the fortress, defended by about 2000 Hungarians. After 39 days of bloody battle, the Turks gave up and retreated. This story is one of the most famous in Hungary. A famous Hungarian novel outlines the event, "Eclipse of the Crescent Moon" by Geza Gardonyi.
We visited this fortress and it was very fun to scale the walls with the girls, walk around the fortress grounds, and mostly completely to ourselves. There were not many other visitors, so we basically had the place to ourselves. It would have been even more enjoyable if Ashley had not been in one of her moods. Sometimes she just decides to be disagreeable.

We spent a bit of time walking through the old town below the fortress as well. We visited the Cathedral of Eger where we watched a group of men carrying a wooden cross to be displayed at the Christmas market in the center of town.

We really are going to try to return to this city to spend a little more time there.

Such amazing beauty you have seen in the last little while. I love all the pictures :)
Hi. I have found your blog thru the Stimpsons. I love reading about and seeing pics of all the places you visit. How do you plan your travels? Internet, books, word of mouth? We have just moved to England and want to travel as much of Europe as we can. The other thing I find amazing is you take you kids to all the places you go.
you have to go back to eger because we need to send you to our favorite palacinta restaurant. seriously, eating there is worth the trip back alone!
I must admit that I do not check out your blog frequently enough because I get intimidated (and a little jealous) of the super awesome adventures your little family has. But, I'm over it (for now). It is so good to see that your family is doing well. We truly miss you....
