We flew out at midnight Friday (technically Saturday, I guess) and flew overnight to Singapore. I have been here a couple of times but this is Heather and the kids' first time.
We arrived around 6AM and being a night flight, it was actually quite easy. The kids and us slept through it.
We were fortunate to arrive at our hotel around 7:30 and our connecting rooms were actually ready so we were able to shower and get ready to go out.
We first made our way to a shopping area close by to get some breakfast. The hotel recommended we go to the highly touted food stalls for some Singapore street food breakfast. While I am looking forward to eating lunch and dinner here that way, I have no desire to eat noodles for breakfast. So we found Starbucks and pancakes for Ryan.
We headed to Chinatown after breakfast. We asked ourselves why our first stop in Singapore would be Chinatown, considering we live in China, but it was interesting to see the preparations for the New Year events going on, visit the xxxx temple, and realize that we can buy all the same stuff for a quarter of the price.
After Chinatown we decided to take the metro to Orchard Rd. I learned that it costs more for our family and obviously is a lot longer journey via metro than a taxi. So that was the last metro trip we took.
We walked the whole of Orchard Rd before settling on a set of food stalls close to the hotel I used to stay at. The problem was with Chinese new year (I assume), many of them were closed. While Heather and I enjoyed the food, and Ashley, Katie was not impressed and preferred to go hungry. We need to find a better selection for the next meal.
We found some ice cream prior to getting back into a taxi and headed back to the hotel for a short break and to let the kids swim in the hotel pool.
Post our break we went down to Clark Quay to find dinner. It is a beautiful group of restaurants right on the Singapore River, well kept and great architecture. After finding out that many of the restaurants didn't open until 6:30 (it was 5:30) we decided on a Mexican place that was open and quickly regretted it.
The rain began to pour at that point, which was fine, as we were ready to call it a day. With kids, our days begin early and end early, obviously limiting the things we can do. But this just means when we come back to all these places later in life we will still have plenty to do.
